AMY STEBBINS

BIO

Amy Stebbins is a writer and director who lives between Chicago and Frankfurt. She has worked extensively across Germany's public theater landscape at institutions such as the Bavarian State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Augsburg State Theater, the Volksbühne, and the Maxim Gorki Theater. Her work in the United States takes the form of interdisciplinary performance and music-theater with collaborating artists including Grammy-award winner Michael Einziger, electronic music performer Richard Whaling, and the award-winning stage musician Sir Henry.


Stebbins' publications address topics in theater and performance studies, U.S. prisoner rehabilitation, creative arts therapy and contemporary opera. Her academic articles have appeared in SeminarCritical Social Policy and The Arts in Psychotherapy. She has also written on the intersection of US-American new plays, identity politics and the culture industry for Zeit-Online.


Stebbins has also convened multiple Transatlantic exchanges for artists and arts administrators on the topic of new work development. Under the auspices of the German Chancellor Fellowship she brought together leaders from The Bavarian State Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Goodman Theatre, The Münchner Kammerspiele, and the Gärtnerplatztheater. Together with Hauke Berheide she is the co-founder of New Opera Dialogues, an artist-led platform to promote international dialogue on the topics of contemporary aesthetics and best practices for new work development.


Stebbins is an alumna of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Akademie Musiktheater Heute, and the Fulbright Program, She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Germanic Studies and Cinema & Media Studies in 2018. Her dissertation "Theater against the Turn: Acting Dialectics at Frank Castorf's Volksbühne" explores the work of actors at the Berlin Volksbühne, and demonstrates acting’s operations as a mode of political engagement. She received her B.A. in History and Literature from Harvard University in 2007.
